According to the latest report of IC insights in 2016, the global semiconductor chip shipments will reach 1.02 trillion in 2018, with an average annual growth of 7.2% by 2020
IC insights, a market research and research institution, estimates that the global semiconductor chip shipments will exceed the 1 trillion mark in 2018, while the average annual growth will reach 7.2% by 2020.
According to the latest report of 2016 version of IC insight, this year’s semiconductor unit shipments will be 886.7 billion, the next year’s will be 950 billion, and it is expected to reach a milestone of 1.02 trillion by 2018. The report includes all semiconductors, integrated circuits and independent components of optical sensors, among which IC, sensor and discrete element (OSD) semiconductor chip shipments will continue to grow.

Semiconductor unit shipment growth tracking
According to IC insight, reaching 1 trillion in 2018 represents a compound annual growth rate of 9% in semiconductor shipments over the past 40 years, with only 32.8 billion units in 1978. Such rapid growth shows the world’s growing dependence on semiconductors, the market research company said.
The 1 largest growth rate of semiconductor shipments in the past 40 years was 34% in 1984. The biggest recession was in 2001 after the bubble burst, and 19% in the same year. After the financial crisis, semiconductor shipments fell for the first time for two consecutive years in 2008 and 2009, and then increased by 25% in 2010.

According to IC insight, in the past 40 years, although IC has grown in a wider range of semiconductor categories, the proportion of independent components of optical sensors has remained basically unchanged. In 1980, optical sensors accounted for 78% of total semiconductor shipments, while IC shipments accounted for 22%. In 2015, 35 years later, optical sensors accounted for 72% of total semiconductor shipments, while IC accounted for 28%.

IC insights forecasts that OSD and IC products mainly used for smart phones, automotive electronic systems, and the Internet of things (IOT) are the product categories with the largest growth in shipment in 2016. Among the IC product categories, the highest growth rate is 29% of 32-bit microcontrollers (MCU), 15% of wireless communication and dedicated analog ICs, and 12% of driver ICs. In OSD, 15% of the magnetic field sensor, 13% of the actuator and 12% of the semiconductor surge suppressor are the main growth areas.
