Vehicle borne laser radar (vehicle LiDAR) is the core component of autopilot, and the market demand for it is increasing. A decade ago, a high-end car lidar cost as much as $75000. In order to achieve mass production, manufacturers have tried to reduce the cost by 90%, but this is not enough. In recent years, the domestic automotive lidar industry chain has gradually formed and some products have been launched. More than 20 domestic automotive lidar products are summarized in international electronic business information, and the current situation of China’s automotive lidar industry is briefly analyzed.
Ten years ago, Google used a velodyne "sky high" lidar on its driverless car, which costs as much as $75000, about half of the total cost of Google’s driverless car. Later, waymo, independent of Google, successfully reduced the cost of the car lidar by 90%.
"Reduce cost, improve technology and launch new products" is the focus of current domestic and foreign lidar manufacturers. In China, some enterprises are also actively distributing vehicle lidar and releasing or mass producing some products. Domestic vehicle lidar breaks through 64 lines
After the layout of the previous few years, domestic lidar enterprises began to mass produce their products. Because of the technical difficulties of vehicle lidar, the newly entered enterprises can not take out the products temporarily in a short period of time, and some newer enterprises are not listed in this table.
Lidar is composed of transmitter and receiver. Single line lidar is one transmitter and one receiver. It can get 2D data, but it can’t recognize the height information of the target. In the application of unmanned vehicle, single line lidar generally exists as the supplement of vision system. The multi line lidar can recognize 3D data and has higher accuracy. It is the best sensor solution for L4-L5 level automatic driving.
At present, the LiDAR products that can be widely applied to autopilot cars are still dominated by 16 line and 32 line mechanical LiDAR. Suteng juchuang, radium intelligence, Beike Tianhua and Hesai technology all have mechanical lidar products, and Hesai technology even released 64 line products. Compared with foreign velodyne, which has provided Google with 64 line products ten years ago, it can be seen that domestic lidar for unmanned vehicle is still a follower.
Miniaturization, lightweight and solid state are the trend
Observing the release time of products, we can see that miniaturization and lightweight are the trends. The velodyne hdl-64e, originally built on the top of Google’s driverless car, was dubbed KFC’s "family bucket" by insiders, with a weight of 13.2kg. Ten years later, the pandar 64 of Hesai technology is 11.5cm in diameter, 11.6cm in height and only weighs 1.52kg.
In addition, solid state is also worthy of our attention. Two years ago, domestic manufacturers had the mass production capacity of 16 line vehicle lidar, and some enterprises began to focus on solid-state lidar and released mixed solid-state lidar products.
The concept of hybrid solid-state lidar was introduced by velodyne’s car lidar product named "hybrid solid-state super ice hockey" which was displayed at CES in January 2016. According to the definition of the industry, the laser scanning mode of lidar transmitter using MEMS scanning mirror on the micro scale is defined as "mixed solid state". Because mixed solid-state lidar is easier to realize in technology and cheaper, many manufacturers are developing it.
However, now some manufacturers combine the mixed solid-state lidar technology to work on higher wire harness products, such as 64 wire, 128 wire or even 200 wire. Although the hybrid solid lidar is easy to realize in technology and cheaper than the mechanical lidar, the amount of laser that can be projected by the micro scanning mirror in MEMS system is limited, and it is very difficult for distant objects to reflect and be detected. Compared with other technologies, the hybrid solid-state lidar based on MEMS technology produces more beam divergence, which makes it difficult to consider long-distance, high-resolution and wide field of view. Therefore, the current mixed solid-state lidar is more suitable for installation in the rear-view mirror and other positions.
Therefore, mechanical lidar still has advantages, even if its price is more expensive, it can still exist as a high-end lidar product. In the future, some mechanical lidar will be replaced by the lower price mechanical lidar, finally forming the perfect combination of "mechanical lidar + solid lidar" with high capacity and low cost.
